It has a solid spec sheet with a 1080p 0.23in DLP chip, no-frills picture settings, and built-in stereo 8W audio speakers for a good cinema experience.
Powered by Android TV 11, the Mars 3 Air runs most of the same apps as other projectors, including all your usual streaming services. It has a few preset picture modes, but also an ‘User mode’ that lets you tweak contrast, saturation, sharpness, and color temperature. There’s a wall color setting, too, so the projector can compensate for a non-white surface. It also offers a motion compensation feature, which is handy if you have a lot of movement onscreen.
Epson Home Cinema 3800
Specified at 3,000 lumens with an auto-iris, this Epson 3LCD projector can handle a wide range of screen sizes. While it’s not a bleeding-edge model in terms of image quality, feed it the right kind of content and you’ll be impressed. For instance, the HC3800 delivered superb detail in close-ups of rounded objects like faces, and it nailed the subtle gradations of red, green and blue that create natural-looking skin tones in movies like La La Land. It also nailed HDR’s promise of brighter, more vibrant colors and better contrast than SDR. Manufacturer contrast ratio claims are often inflated, but this unit delivered a very respectable performance.
As with the 5050UB that I reviewed, the HC3800 offers a wide range of image settings to tweak image sharpness and “detail enhancement” features. Those options include five presets to help you find a look that best suits your room and content. It also offers frame interpolation with high, medium and low frame rates for smooth video playback.
For connectivity, this model offers dual 18 Gbps HDMI 2.0 inputs to support 4K HDR playback at 60 Hz. It’s compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray players, streaming media devices and game consoles, and supports both 2D and 3D displays (optional glasses sold separately). A pair of 10-watt stereo speakers is built into the case. A 12v trigger out port and mini-USB power-only port are provided for external accessories.
Optoma TK860i
This midrange 4K projector offers a premium viewing experience for an excellent price. Its 3300 ANSI lumens provide enough light to work in most rooms, and its contrast ratio is 50,000:1. The device also supports a wide lcd 14300 lumen projector range of formats, including HDR, making it perfect for displaying the latest 4K content.
The TK860i also boasts short lag times and tends to show fewer rainbow artifacts than other DLP projectors we’ve tested. It’s not as bright as the LS11000, but its brightest mode has a slightly greenish hue that won’t bother many viewers.
It’s a bit more expensive than the HT2060, but it does offer enhanced detail and is worth the extra cost. Its iris automatically adjusts depending on the lighting conditions in your room, which helps to keep images looking sharp and clear.
Like the Epson LS11000, this projector does not support 3D video playback. This isn’t a big deal for most users, as 3D content isn’t widely available anymore, but it may be an issue if you own a collection of 3D movies or videos. Its high-light output and good-sounding speaker are a major plus, though. And its Android TV system makes it easy to access all your favorite content. And you can connect your devices via USB or HDMI, ensuring that you always have the best picture quality.
